The government in Addis Ababa views what took place in November 2020 in its rebel province of Tigray as a simple police operation in the north of the country on the disputed border with Eritrea and Sudan. In reality, the clash between the Ethiopian Army and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) was a real civil war. Fighter planes, armored vehicles and thousands of soldiers were deployed. Both sides fought with determination. It seems that the conflict caused more than 1,000 deaths, including those of several hundred civilians; approximately 50,000 fled across the border to Sudan to escape reprisals.[1]


Media ecology, a subset of communication studies, approaches communication as an ecosystem. On February 4, 2019, Pope Francis and Sheikh Ahmad al-Tayyeb signed a joint declaration of goodwill.[1] The text calls for a commentary from both a Catholic theological and Islamic studies point of view.[2] First, however, some remarks on context are due.

Comparable texts have been signed before. Among them are the final declarations of the four seminars of the Catholic-Muslim Forum.[3] This time, in contrast, delegations were not the signatories, but rather the Pontiff himself and an Islamic leader. Bishop Mario Grech is the new secretary general of the Synod of Bishops. Born in Malta in 1957, he was appointed Bishop of Gozo in 2005 by Benedict XVI. From 2013 to 2016 he was president of the Episcopal Conference of Malta. On October 2, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him pro-secretary general of the Synod of Bishops.
